ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF POVERTY ON MATERNAL AND INFANT MORTALITY IN DAURA, KATSINA STATE
ABSTRACT: This research study examines the influence of poverty on maternal and infant mortality in Daura, Katsina state. The concepts of maternal and infant mortality have long been recognised in the fields of social and medical sciences. Both of these factors present significant risks to the survival of the human species, particularly for future generations. It is commonly stated that the well-being of women and the young population is crucial for the future of any society. The well-being of both these groups is crucial for the sustenance of society and the economy. Therefore, ensuring their health and security is of utmost importance in order to prevent feelings of despair, depression, and loss of lives. To evaluate the influence of this threat in our study area, the researcher employed the utilisation of a questionnaire as the chosen research methodology. The objectives of this study are as follows: to determine the impact of poverty on the health status of women and children, to assess the level of awareness among residents of Daura regarding family planning, and to provide suitable recommendations to relevant authorities. To evaluate the influence of the threat in our study area, the researcher employed the utilisation of a questionnaire as the chosen research methodology. The information collected from the respondents includes their demographic details. The factors contributing to maternal and child mortality were then discussed based on these findings. The research findings led to specific recommendations, including the importance of government and policy makers addressing the social, economic, and cultural factors present in communities. This is crucial in empowering women to have agency over their own health and the health of their children. There is a pressing need to enhance accessibility to medical facilities and allocate sufficient resources for the treatment of malaria, rather than expending substantial funds on HIV/AIDS. Based on the information provided, this project aims to make a significant contribution in reducing the occurrences that lead to maternal and child mortality. However, it is important to recognise that addressing the ever-evolving societal changes requires additional efforts.
